What is an emulator?

An emulator is a program you run on your computer that mimics another system.

Our games are made for the Game Boy Advance, so in order to play them on your computer, you will need an emulator designed to mimic the Game Boy Advance.

There are free emulators available, thanks to the volunteer work of the Game Boy Advance homebrew community.

What is a ROM?

When you purchase a digital copy of our games, you will receive a file such as:

InkyAndTheAlienAquarium.gba

This is called the ROM file. It is the digital version of the physical cartridge.

You can play any Game Boy Advance game with an emulator. In order to play our game, you will load the ROM file we provided into the emulator.

Installation on Windows

There are different emulators to pick from, but we recommend you use the mGBA emulator.

You can download the mGBA emulator by visiting:

mGBA Download Page (mgba.io)

For Windows, we recommend using the link labelled:

Windows (installer .exe)

Double-click the installer and click YES to any prompts. The installation wizard will step you through the process:

After installation, double-click on the ROM file in order to open it in mGBA:

You did it!

See the next section on keyboard controls.

Installation on Mac OSX

There are different emulators to pick from, but we recommend you use the mGBA emulator.

You can download the mGBA emulator by visiting:

mGBA Download Page (mgba.io)

For Mac OSX, we recommend using the link labelled:

macOS (modern, 10.13+)

Double-click the .DMG file. This will open a Finder window.

Drag-and-drop the mGBA application onto the Applications shortcut.

mGBA will be installed.

Next, open the Applications folder inside Finder.

Since mGBA was installed from the Internet, you will need to right-click the app and select "Open" the first time you run it:

Then select "Open" from the security prompt:

Once mGBA has launched, you can drag-and-drop the ROM file onto the mGBA screen, or you can load the ROM by using the menu File → Load ROM.

You should see the game run!

See the next section on keyboard controls.

Installation on Linux

There are different emulators to pick from, but we recommend you use the mGBA emulator.

For Linux, the easiest method to install mGBA is to use the Ubuntu Software application, and search for "mGBA".

After installing, mGBA will be available in your applications.

Run mGBA, and you will be able to load the ROM from the menu!

See the next section on keyboard controls.

Controls

By default, you can use the following keyboard keys to play the game:

KeyboardGame Boy Advance
Arrow keysDirectional pad (D-pad)
EnterStart
BackspaceSelect
XA button
ZB button
AL trigger
SR trigger

You can change these defaults in the mGBA preferences, under the Keyboard section.

If you have a USB controller, you can also configure that in the preferences, under the Controllers section.

Keep in mind that the game thinks it's running on a real Game Boy Advance! So when the game says to "Press Select" (for example), you should hit Backspace on the keyboard.
